Lojong Study Group (In Person & Online)

Date details +
Room: Cedarcroft Center at 6112 York Road

*** Our class on July 22nd will be both in person at Cedarcroft Center at 6112 York Road (location details below) and on Zoom. ***

You are warmly invited to join a participant-led study group focused on Lojong, the ancient Tibetan guide for developing compassion and relieving the sufferings of ego. We meet every Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. on Zoom to explore a different slogan. We use Pema Chodron's Start Where You Are and Norman Fischer's Training in Compassion as study texts.

    ***

This week (July 22nd), we will be discussing a talk by Ani Pema Chödrön on the practice of tonglen. You may listen to the recorded talk here and/or read the transcript of the talk here

In advance of the class, we suggest that participants experiment with a tonglen "on the spot" practice in their daily lives. You may wish to consider starting with yourself in doing this practice. For instance, if a situation arises that triggers an emotion such as anger, resentment, jealousy, self-pity, blame, impatience, craving, etc., you could first breathe in the uncomfortable emotion on the spot and breathe out relief, clarity and peace for yourself.

You might then bring to mind all the other people who at that moment are experiencing the same emotion and continue the practice with them in mind. This practice doesn't have to take much time: less than a minute can still be of benefit.

Please share your experience of this practice when we meet!
